GMHBA Stadium to host more Big Bash Cricket games this summer

GMHBA Stadium is set to host even more Big Bash cricket this summer with the Melbourne Renegades, the Victorian State Government and Kardinia Park Stadium Trust confirming the club would play BBL and WBBL matches at the Stadium again this season.

The Renegades are set to play three WBBL and two BBL matches in Geelong including two double-headers at GMHBA Stadium.

Kardinia Park Stadium Trust Chief Executive Michael Brown said the extra matches will provide further opportunities to showcase the first class facilities at GMHBA Stadium.

“We are thrilled to welcome back the Renegades to their home away from home, GMHBA Stadium. Securing two BBL double-headers further enhances our reputation as Australia’s ‘Best Regional Stadium’ and we cannot wait to once again showcase the Stadium and Geelong to the world. We would like to acknowledge the Victorian Government, Cricket Australia, the Melbourne Renegades and City of Greater Geelong for making today’s announcement possible.”

Victorian Minister for Tourism, Major Events and Sport John Eren said the Big Bash matches form a key part of the region’s events calendar.

“We had 329,493 people through the gates of Kardinia Park last financial year and with world class teams like the Renegades putting on a show, we’ll surpass that total this year.”

The Renegades hosted a historic double-header at GMHBA Stadium in January, drawing a crowd of nearly 24,000 people – a record for a non-AFL match at the venue.

City of Greater Geelong Mayor Bruce Harwood said last season’s crowd showed the passion for cricket in the city.

“We’re rapt to be welcoming the Renegades back to Geelong for two games this summer. We’re a cricket loving city, and the large crowd for last season’s match showed there’s enormous interest in the Big Bash. I’m certain our community will get behind the Renegades just as strongly this time around.”

“Last season demonstrated how much the Geelong and wider Surf Coast communities want Big Bash on their doorstep,” Melbourne Renegades Chief Executive Stuart Coventry said.

“I’d like to thank the Government and the City of Greater Geelong for its support to bring more major events to Geelong and to our colleagues at the Kardinia Park Stadium Trust for their support for cricket.”

The Renegades will host a Family Day, WBBL match against Brisbane Heat and a BBL practice match at Geelong Cricket Ground on Sunday December 16, in partnership with the City of Greater Geelong and the Kardinia Park Stadium Trust.
