Plans underway to increase capacity at GMHBA Stadium to 40,000

With the Brownlow Stand opening in May this year, plans are already underway to complete GMHBA Stadium and make it truly The Best Regional Stadium in Australia.

The Trust is working with the State Government to develop the Business Case for the Stage 5 redevelopment at the Northern End of the Stadium which will see the Ford and Gary Ablett stands replaced and modernized to include a regional cricket and sports hub.

This follows a commitment of $3.9 million by the Victorian State Government for Planning and Design Work for the project. A range of stakeholders including Geelong Football Club and Geelong Cricket Club are being consulted to ensure the best outcome is achieved.

“We are very excited to have approval to proceed with the Business Case Design phase for the redevelopment.  Michael Brown, CEO of the Kardinia Park Stadium Trust said.

“Along with increasing the Stadium’s capacity to 40,000, our major objective is to open the Stadium up to the community and encourage greater usage for events and the community’.

Other objectives that are set to be included within the Business Case are:

  • Equipping the Stadium to host a variety of sport and non-sport events other than AFL.
  • A regional Cricket hub.
  • Increase economic development opportunities within the region.

The Business Case will be considered by Government as part of the budget cycle for the 2018/2019 financial year.
