Girls Cricket ‘Come and Try Day’

Barwon All Girls Cricket

On Sunday the 13th of November, Julie Allan of Cricket Victoria hosted a ‘Come and Try Day’ for girls of all ages and abilities.

Girls Carnival of Cricket was a great success on Sunday on Simonds Stadium.

About 40 girls attended the day ranging in ages from 5yo right up to 16yo.

There was an amazing amount of input from Karen Rolton – the Ex Aussie Captain and current WBBL Renegades Assistant Coach – what a treat it was for the girls!

Skills games started off the exciting day with some batting games, bowling and throwing games – and of course a few games of tug-of-war – no day would be complete without it. Once the girls showcased their incredible talent, it was then onto some match practice with the younger girls playing a great little shortened version – with lots of squeals and giggles – they had an absolute ball.

The middle aged girls were off on a game of T20 Blast on Geelong’s renowned Simonds Stadium. The older girls were off to the Renegades blow-up bowling tunnel for some bowling practice and of course some music and yes girls, it does gave to go in the tunnel – not on the outside.

The middle and older girls then swapped over with Karen Rolton setting the older girls some challenges while they were batting – no bashing – place the ball into the gaps. This was fantastic advice for those girls trying out for Barwon Rockettes too. The girls did a fantastic job and loved the opportunity.

Willow the Renegades WBBL Mascot was there and she was a huge hit with the younger kids who wanted to continually play cricket with her.

There also needs to be a huge thanks for the support from:

  • Kardinia Park Stadium Trust
  • Geelong Women’s Cricket Club
  • Sue Gell of Leisure Networks
  • Jesse Day and Ash Sweet of the Renegades
  • Aimee White of Cricket Victoria, and;
  • All the local clubs that came along to support.

Most importantly, a huge thank you to the parents who provided their girls with an opportunity to come along and try cricket, play cricket and have a really fun day with plenty of laughs.

Thanks to everyone and in particular Julie Allan who continues to support girls playing cricket. The fun has only just begun!!

See you all on Sunday the 27th of November at Manifold Heights Cricket Club; come and try between 12pm – 3pm.

Please contact Jules if you need any further information on the details below and please don’t forget to bring along a friend.
