This Girl Can – Victoria & Kardinia Park Encourage Women to Have a Go

VicHealth’s This Girl Can – Victoria campaign celebrates real women giving it a go and getting active no matter how well they do it, how they look or how sweaty they get. The campaign is about women getting active whenever, wherever and however they choose – without worrying about being judged.

Research has shown that Victorian adults aren’t getting enough physical activity to benefit their health, with significantly more women than men doing no physical activity in a typical week. We know that nearly half of Victorian women aged 25 and over feel intimidated by gyms, and two in five women feel embarrassed exercising in public.

The Kardinia Park Precinct is a central hub for physical activity in Geelong hosting vibrant mix of sporting clubs and organisations. The Kardinia Park Stadium Trust, together with our precinct partners, applaud VicHealth and This Girl Can – Victoria in their mission to help women find an activity that is enjoyable and feels right for them.

Whether it’s organised sports, umpiring, use of the Kardinia Park outdoor exercise station and walking paths, dance lessons or frisbee with the dog – the options are endless. The Trust shares a vision of ingrained inclusion and equality in sport, particularly women and people of all abilities.

The This Girl Can – Victoria program is driving change at grass roots level for women and sporting organisations in our community.

A recent community event at GMHBA Stadium was the Galaxy United Football Club Celebration of Women’s Football. The day saw local girls and women; from Mini Roos to WNPL – under 12’s through to the senior team – showcase some fantastic football talent. It also highlighted organisations, support and pathways available for women in sport. The event was very successful thanks to the players and community presence.

It is with great excitement that the Trust has watched the development of the VFLW Geelong Cats team and the explosion of local AFL Barwon Women’s teams in the Geelong region. We are looking forward to further supporting women’s football with the commencement of Geelong Cats AFLW team in 2019.

A special shout out to This Girl Can – Victoria sports partners located here at Kardinia Park – working hard to provide practical programs, sharing their enthusiasm and passion with all members of our community.

GMHBA Stadium is a stadium for all. We look forward to continuing to support the great work of our precinct partners, Geelong sporting organisations and VicHealth to smash the barriers that stop women and girls in our community from getting involved.
