On Wednesday 6 May, Kardinia Park Stadium Trust (KPST) supported the Safe Steps Candlelight Vigil. The vigil takes place annually on National Family Violence Remembrance Day, during Domestic Violence Prevention Month.
Led by courageous survivors and passionate advocates, the Safe Steps Candlelight Vigil brings Victoria together in a powerful tribute to honour and remember the people whose lives have been lost to family and domestic violence.
The Vigil plays a crucial role in raising awareness of family and domestic violence by providing a platform for sharing stories of resilience, sparking hope and inspiring change. It empowers help-seekers to access support before it’s too late, helping to break the cycle of intergenerational trauma and prevent further loss of life.
In Geelong, the vigil was led by Barwon Area Integrated Family Violence Committee, Meli, and The Sexual Assault & Family Violence Centre, with support from City of Greater Geelong and the Geelong Arts Centre.
Buildings across Geelong were lit up purple to mark this important day, including GMHBA Stadium. KPST’s Respect at our Stadium Action Plan sets out our commitments to address the gender-based violence and our role in creating a safe, welcoming and inclusive environment for all, and we stand in solidarity to shine a light on the impact of family and domestic violence and help create a future free from harm.
