Sean has worked in the local sport scene for over a decade and knows firsthand how important sporting clubs are to the fabric of our community and the positive impact they bring to people’s lives.
“Working in community sport is incredibly rewarding, knowing that you’re helping support people’s outlet each weekend, something that brings so much joy and passion to so many.”
According to Sean, our local clubs are progressive and many are leading the way to creating not only strong clubs, but true community hubs.
“When clubs commit to tackling disrespect and promoting gender equity, they create environments that are more inclusive, welcoming, and sustainable. These initiatives benefit all members — regardless of gender, culture, or background.”
But as we know, passion can boil over and intervention is required. Sean commits to not turning his back on disrespect and championing Respect from both a league and club perspective.
“In many cases, once the issue is addressed, people quickly acknowledge and correct their behaviour. But it’s when disrespect goes unchecked that real problems arise.”
“These are never easy conversations to have, but they are necessary. Calling out poor behaviour is uncomfortable at times, but it’s vital to ensure our clubs remain safe, respectful, and inclusive spaces for everyone.”
And speaking from experience, Sean sees that creating strong club culture built on Respect, leads to success both on and off the field.
“The strongest and most successful clubs in our region aren’t just focused on their senior football teams — they build inclusive, supportive environments that involve everyone.”
And kudos to the clubs and leaders from our region who are doing this work. Programs such as the Sexual Assault and Family Violence Centre’s Respect Starts Here are excellent starting points for clubs to reflect, educate themselves, and begin important conversations.
“When a club has a culture of respect, you can see and hear it, it’s welcoming, inclusive, and ensures that everyone feels valued and involved
