In mid-2025, Kardinia Park Stadium Trust, put the call out to the Geelong community seeking a local artist to design a mural that celebrates civic pride, unique elements of Geelong and the different sports and entertainment that has taken centre stage at the stadium. Over the past few months, we have been working with Lewis Brownlie and we’re delighted to share his artwork with everyone who visits GMHBA Stadium.
Make sure you visit the Players Stand next time you’re at the stadium and see how many different elements about Geelong and the region you can spot!
Artist Statement
Originally raised in Rochdale, near Manchester in the UK, I’ve called Geelong home for over a decade. I’ve been drawing and making art for as long as I can remember, and in recent years my practice has centred around architectural illustration – buildings, places, maps, the rhythms of buildings and the stories held around them. My work often begins with simple lines, shapes, and spaces that gradually build into larger, more detailed scenes.
This mural is a homage to Geelong and the many layers that make it unique. The imagery stretches from the bay to the river and everything that connects them. Some of these drawings began over ten years ago; others are much more recent. Together, they form a visual archive of the places, icons, and moments that hold an affectionate place in Geelong’s heart. Within the work you’ll find history, industry, sport and nature. If you’re local, I’m sure you’ll find many familiar scenes from our town, and if you’re a visitor, this is a taster of what Geelong has to offer, woven together into a montage of the place we share.
